BIOGRAPHY (June 2015)
Paul Tzanetopoulos is a conceptually-based artist who uses many media. His large-scale interactive works utilize light, digital media, video, electronic and sound components. Tzanetopoulos was the first artist in Los Angeles to present a video installation projection and computer-run-intermedia work (Ruth Schaffner Gallery, 1974). His work is included in many public and private collections, including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection of 20th Century Art and the Permanent Collection of the United States Consulate General. Tzanetopoulos received an MFA With Honors in Fine Art from the University of California, Irvine, and his BFA With Honors (Outstanding Fine Arts Graduate) from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Tzanetopoulos also works in the realm of public art and has completed more than 30 public art commissions since 1992.
One of his best-known public art commissions is his award-winning Kinetic Light Installation (untitled) created for the LAX Gateway Pylon Project, Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), Los Angeles, which was inaugurated in August, 2000. The LAX Gateway project includes a complex of 26 giant, translucent glass pylons in which Tzanetopoulos created a large-scale, monolithic, kinetic light sculpture incorporating synchronized color arrays, movement and patterns, utilizing digital controls. The Kinetic Light Installation was created with the capacity for video projections to be incorporated into its programming. Tzanetopoulos’ LAX design references his geo-social large-scale environmental lighting and earthworks installations from the 1970s. Tzanetopoulos' kinetic light sculpture was awarded the International Illumination Design Award of Excellence - The Paul Waterbury Award for Outdoor Lighting Design - by the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, and the Award of Merit, Lumen West Awards. During 2006, Tzanetopoulos worked with the LAWA team to install LED technology during a major refurbishment of the pylons. On the tenth anniversary of the pylon project, the City of Los Angeles bestowed upon him a Certificate of Commendation for his contributions as artist to the iconic sculpture.
Tzanetopoulos’ recent exhibitions include ELEMENTAL - Seeing the Light (2015) at the Sturt Haaga Gallery, Descanso Gardens, Westridge Centennial Art Exhibition (2014) curated by Jay Belloli, the solo retrospective “Early Work 1972 - 1982” at the Jancar Gallery, Los Angeles (2010); a video installation for an electronic sound concert Analoglive! at REDCAT Theatre, Disney Hall (2007); PAUL TZANETOPOULOS / eco”logic”, a solo exhibition at the Jancar Gallery (2007); a solo multimedia installation at The Los Angeles Rectangle Gallery (West Hollywood, California, 2004); and, with Daniel Rothman, a collaborative sound and light work at the Neues Museum Weserburg Bremen Gallery in Bremen, Germany (2004-05). Also, Tzanetopoulos was commissioned to produce a General Electric-sponsored installation at the new Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, Ohio (2003).
In the public art arena, Tzanetopoulos just completed a sculpture and installation for the city of Pasadena, California. Other recently completed commissions include two works for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission -- a design for an inner city hospital (2012) and a tile mural for Mary Bethune Park, Different Strokes, (2009). Other numerous public art projects include an architectural frit on two sides of a pedestrian bridge for a mixed-use development in the City of Burbank, California, All Walks Run Together (2005); e/motion 3, (2004), a video projection installation triptych composed of six live camera feeds, projected on a translucent building facade, for the City of West Hollywood, California; Breezy and Delightful, (1993), a kinetic, counter-rotating disk installation for a MetroRail station commissioned by LA Metro for the Blue Line; Notice Blue and Green, (1998), two porcelain murals commissioned for the new U.S. Consular Office Building in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, by ArtSource Inc., for the U.S. Department of State; and two projects commissioned by the City of Manhattan Beach, Cultural Wave, (1997), a large-scale, 600-lineal-foot bas-relief tile mural covering a coastal concrete Sea Wall,  and Permanent Wave, (1997), a porcelain mural.
Born in Athens, Greece, Tzanetopoulos has lived and worked in Los Angeles for the last 30 years, during which time he has exhibited extensively. In 1991, his painting Anderson was added to the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. His installation Request for Change was included in The Whitney in Los Angeles exhibition, curated by Barbara Haskell in 1981. Reviewing Tzanetopoulos' solo show, a five-year survey, Stitch to Pixel to Paint at the Dorothy Goldeen Gallery (1993), in the Los Angeles Times, Susan Kandel wrote,  "For Paul Tzanetopoulos, plaid is seasonless - a perfect metaphor for information and the relentless procession of minutiae that characterizes the information society." From 1981 to 1987 Tzanetopoulos was a member of the Board of Directors and the Board of Advisors for the influential FAR (Foundation for Art Resources) in Los Angeles, which serves as a significant source of alternative forums for innovative art.
To commemorate the one-year anniversary of 9/11, he donated his talents to complete another commission for Los Angeles World Airports, creating 9/11: Red, White and Blue, (2002), a temporary red, white and blue installation for the pylons, which was shown 9/11/02 and again for the five-year anniversary of 9/11 in 2006, and on subsequent anniversaries.
